(Self Flashed Base)
Product Details
SDF-20SF (Self Flashed Base) is designed for sloped low profile roof installations such as composite shingle. Minimum slope should be greater than 2:12 and maximum slope should be less than 6:12. (Use a curb mount base if the slope is less or greater than these slope ratios.)

The self flashed base is designed to slide under an existing roof. The based is attached to the roof decking with either roofing nails or screws. Care should be taken to waterproof the based to the roof decking and roofing materials. Use the highest quality roofing silicon. Always determine the amount of run off water at the head of the base. If the location of the fan is an area where there may be an excessive amount of run-off water, then use a curb-mount base.

MAXIMUM OUTSIDE CURB DIMENSION SHOULD BE NO LARGER THAN 16" X 19-1/4" TO ALLOW FOR PROPER FLASHING. IF MORE CLEARANCE IS NEEDED REDUCE CURB SIZE ACCORDINGLY.

Product Details
The Remote Mount PV Panel Option is available for all our fans. It’s primary purpose is to make an existing penetration or hole in the roof usable, regardless of it’s orientation to direct sun exposure. However, this does not mean that any existing hole will be effective. Initial heat loading will begin to take place at the highest point of the attic, utilizing an existing opening 20 ft below the ridgeline is NOT going to help much. Conversely, the utilization of an existing opening centered directly under a large shade tree is generally not going to be as effective, even with a remote panel, because the air being extracted will not be the air being affected. Ideally, the existing hole should be 24”-36” below the ridgeline, in the direct line of exposure to the sun throughout the day. So, If there is an existing hole you wish to utilize, or you wish to keep all your ventilation hidden or obscured to one side of the home over another, or perhaps there is an H.O.A. involved that may have a preference you wish to honor, then the use of our Remote Panel option may be a perfect solution.

Our Remote Panel comes equipped with 15 ft of shielded wire, and a solar fan with the proper base of your choice. It is important that the PV Panel be installed within the confines of the 15ft wire provided, as line resistance will become an issue that can hurt the PV panel.

Installation of the PV Panel is as simple as one might expect. The 15ft wire is sealed directly into the Panel from the factory and a ¼” hole can be drilled through the roof, and the wire run directly through it. This is generally the preferred method in that 15 ft of wire goes a lot further in a straight line in the attic rather then over it.

The question of elevating the panel is a good one to ask. It will always be a good idea to orient the panel to the sun, and increasing airflow under the PV Panel will maximize the panel’s efficiency. Therefore we would encourage it. However roof pitches, building materials and sun exposures will differ with every home, and as such, provision of materials to build to provide for this would be cost prohibitive as well as nothing more then a guess. We have in the past used various lengths of aluminum tubing, SS Lag bolts w/washers, and RTV Silicone sealant with fair results.

(Curb Mount Base)
SDF-20CM (Curb Mount Base) is designed for curb mount installations. Generally a 2"x4" or 2"x6" curb box is built and flashing is attached to the perimeter of the curb box. Curb mount installations should be used on flat or very low slope roofs. Curb mount installations are also recommended for higher profile roofs, such as ceramic or concrete tile, certain metal roofs, thick wood shake, etc. The flashing materials are generally metal, but can be made of certain types of roofing materials. Care should be taken to isolate dissimilar metals and to properly waterproof the curb box to the roof.

On top of the curb box, attach weather stripping or two sided foam tape. Place the SDF-20CM base on top of the curb box and fasten at least two screws on each side into the curb box.

(Gable Mount)
SDF-20GM (Gable Mount) Our Gable Mount exhaust fan is designed to fit either onto or into the existing 16” vertical studs left exposed behind the existing Gable Vent in the attic. Older homes with nothing externally exposed accept the lateral louvered gable vent will have little issue with this installation as generally the studs are left exposed in the attic.

In some cases however, these lateral gable vents were made a little oversize, or the construction of the slant of the louvers was incorrect, and driving rain has necessitated the partial or maybe even complete blockage of these vents. Also in some truly older homes the Gable vent may be the only ventilation on the home and there is no soffit ventilation what so ever. In cases like this, the addition of soffit ventilation will always be a good idea (where it can be added when there is an over hanging eve that can be reached), but in the event there is no overhang or eve then we’d recommend the addition of air hawks along the bottom of the roof about 2ft up from the roof edge so we can get some cooler air in

In the newer homes designer Gable vents are often nothing more then ornamental, offering little or no airflow at all. This can become a huge issue. A 16” octagon open louvred Gable vent will typically only have about 12” of air flow, and our fan will be pushing 1275 cfm through that hole. It is unlikely the Gable vent will last. In most cases these vents are obscure shapes installed in either in brick, vinyl siding, or Hardy Board. And installed from the outside 25 to 40 ft in the air. Installing the fan is easy, but the same may not be said for whatever you have to do for the Gable.

Installation of the PV panel is fairly simple and straight forward (see Remote for specifics)

Choosing a Gable vent over our conventional roof mount ventilation usually comes down to the consumers hesitance to want another hole in his roof, and a sincere belief that gable ventilation should do the job. Well at one time in home design, it did. But those day’s are gone. Even those older surviving homes that did once, can’t now because of the environment the homes been relegated to.. No gable fan of any kind can prevent heat load, by nature of our proactive solar-powered operation is better, we can retard the process and maybe even prevent oppression (the AC killer), but sooner or later the attic will get hot. With roof mounted ventilation we’re working with the fundamentals of nature, With anything else, we’re working against it.
